This Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health is suitable for everyone.  It provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a suspected mental health condition, the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost a person towards professional help. All members of the public can benefit from this course and it is a great stepping stone into First Aid for Mental Health.

We already know that anyone can be affected by a mental health condition at any stage of their life, either themselves, a family member, friend or colleague can be affected. Mental health conditions are often more difficult to spot than physical health conditions because of the “dreadful stigmas” attached to them and the ways in which they can be masked by the individual.  Many people affected by mental health conditions are not comfortable talking about them, they are aware of the issues they have but very often see no way out of the situation they find themselves in or worse don’t know where or how to seek help.
Friends, family members and peers often feel helpless and ill equipped to deal with a colleague or loved one with a mental health condition. However, it doesn’t have to be like that!!

With careful understanding, appropriate intervention, help, guidance and signposting these individuals can get better in themselves.

The Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health course will cover a range of subject including:

  • What is First Aid for Mental Health?
  • Identifying mental health conditions
  • Providing advice and starting a conversation
